چکیده

An understanding of the spatial dimension of economic and social activity requires methods that can separate out the relationship between spatial units that is due to the effect of common factors from that which is purely spatial even in an abstract sense. The same applies to the empirical analysis of networks in general. We are able to distinguish between cross-sectional strong dependence and weak dependence. Strong dependence in turn suggests that there are common factors. We use cross unit averages to extract both national and regional factors and contrast this to a principal components approach widely used in the literature. We then use thesholding to determine significant bilateral correlations (signifying neighbours) between spatial units and compare this to an approach that just uses distance to determine units that are neighbours. We apply these methods to real house price changes at the level of the Metropolitan Statistical Area in the USA. JEL Classification: C21, C23

Incorporating spatial dependence in regional frequency analysis

The efficiency of regional frequency analysis (RFA) is undermined by intersite dependence, which is usually ignored in parameter estimation. We propose a spatial index flood model where marginal generalized extreme value distributions are joined by an extreme-value copula characterized by a max-stable process for the spatial dependence. The parameters are estimated with a pairwise likelihood co...

Simulation of spatial dependence in daily rainfall using multisite generators

[1] A new approach for modeling the spatial dependence in rainfall occurrence is proposed. Being motivated by a technique for coupling Markov chains in interacting particle systems, it differs from existing approaches that only attempt to reproduce pairwise spatial correlations of rainfall occurrences or apply complex nonlinear models. It has the advantage of directly modeling the joint depende...

Prediction of spatiotemporal patterns of neural activity from pairwise correlations.

We designed a model-based analysis to predict the occurrence of population patterns in distributed spiking activity. Using a maximum entropy principle with a Markovian assumption, we obtain a model that accounts for both spatial and temporal pairwise correlations among neurons. This model is tested on data generated with a Glauber spin-glass system and is shown to correctly predict the occurren...

The role of high-order phase correlations in texture processing

Isodipole textures are pairs of texture ensembles whose autocorrelations, and hence power spectra, are equal. Examples of readily discriminable isodipole textures are well known. Such discriminations appear to require feature extraction, since the isodipole condition eliminates ensemble differences in spatial frequency content. We studied the effects of phase decorrelation on VEP indices of dis...

Gaussian estimation and joint modeling of dispersions and correlations in longitudinal data

Analysis of longitudinal, spatial and epidemiological data often requires modelling dispersions and dependence among the measurements. Moreover, data involving counts or proportions usually exhibit greater variation than would be predicted by the Poisson and binomial models. We propose a strategy for the joint modelling of mean, dispersion and correlation matrix of nonnormal multivariate correl...
